Born in Virigina and raised in Michigan and California, I attended Kalamazoo College from 1995-2000. During that time, I spent two extended stays in Mexico, one in Oaxaca and one in Mexico City. From 2000-2008, I was a graduate student at UCSD, though I spent some time working at the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, Norway. Since 2008 I’ve been living in Denton and working at UNT with some of the nicest folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.
In addition to my work as a political scientist, I’m also a musician. I played drums in a couple of bands, The North Atlantic, and Pen and Ink. The North Atlantic toured a bunch nationally and released two records and an EP, which helps explain the duration of my time in San Diego. Here’s a picture of me with and the guys at the Metro in Chicago. It’s a great venue. Growing up in Michigan, I saw some of my favorite bands play there. I’m pretty fortunate to have had the opportunity to grace their stage. The photo was taken by Charles Shannon and subsequently cropped by me. Don’t kill me, Charlie.

Oh yeah, I am also fortunate to have a lovely and wonderful wife (and sometime co-author) Sarah Glaser. She’s a on a postdoc at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, so we’re splitting time between Texas and California. Here we are at Macchu Picchu, Peru:
